In my quiz, questions 11 and 12 had the same wording "representing each tribe except one". One answer is is correct and the other wrong. Why is this? Reply

Adrianne June 16, 2023
in response to Jonathan:

You have to really stop and read that question or you might get confused. It's not questions 11 and 12, although it could look like that. Those were options 2 and 3 in the 4-part multiple choice. The Rabbi was saying either "ELEVEN spies, 1 from each tribe minus 1" or "TWELVE spies, 1 from each tribe minus 1." He was trying to be sure that we understand that there were actually 13 tribes, Levi not included b/c he has a portion in each land, but then add Ephraim and Manasseh to take Joseph's place. So technically there are 13 tribes, but Levi doesn't get counted b/c he is the LORD's tithe, and he doesn't have his own land. So Moses sent 12 spies, one from each of the 12 tribes, but not the "13th" which would be Levi. So the Rabbi was trying to help us see, that by sending the 12 spies, that was technically every tribe but one (Levi). I had to stop and read it through a little more carefully too before I answered! in response to Jonathan:

They aren't questions 11 and 12. They are 11 tribes or 12 tribes. One tribe doesn't send a representative. The answer is 12 because of the 13 tribe theory. Reply

There were 13 shvatim ( with efraim and menashe) so only 12 went and not 13 Reply

in response to Adrianne:

Thanks Adrianne. I will read the question more carefully next time! :-) You are correct, I knew the answer but was confused and misunderstood what the numbers stood for.. Thanks to everyone else who offered encouragement! Reply
